The loop is everywhere. ChatGPT and Gemini summarize journalism without sending readers to it, and the independent press is being wiped out. More than half the open web is now AI slop. 200,000 creative-industry jobs lost in four years, by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ count. AI music crowds out musicians. Job seekers use AI to flood recruiters who use AI to screen them, and “more AI use begets more AI use, to no one’s benefit.” Students offload their thinking to the machine while Brookings finds the risks massively outweigh the benefits. The snake eats its own tail, and the people who built it reap the gains.
Technocrats are stealing the world’s data for their own AI training advantage while killing the golden goose in the process. Charles was one of the more rational voices in a chat where I first met him. Gregarious and good natured, he was always a joy to converse with. He was a generous and caring friend, and I will miss him.
Music, his love of bluegrass, country and 80’s synth-pop was one of his main interests, having met many of the great musicians of the genres, going to many concerts and events. He was always so proud to have met them.
I shared the joy of music with his son Stevie one evening, over video chat. I played some guitar riffs and blew minds 😀
Charles said it was an important and inspirational moment for Steve, for which I am so thankful to have shared.
